Privacy Policy

The short version. Patois has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. To open a link in your app, your device reads the song’s details from the music page, then sends the link and those details to Patois’s service to find the match.

What the app sends

When you open a music link with Patois — through the share sheet or the Safari or Chrome extension — the app sends the following to the Patois API at api.getpatois.com:

The music link you are opening. For example an open.spotify.com or music.apple.com address. For podcasts this link is not sent.
The song’s details, when read on your device. The title, artist, length and track number shown on the music page.
A podcast’s details, when it should open in Spotify or Deezer. The show’s name and publisher, the episode’s title, date and length, and your device’s country.
Your IP address. This is not something the app adds — every request on the internet carries it. It is used to apply rate limits so the service cannot be abused.

Nothing else leaves your device. The app does not read your browsing history, your library, your listening activity, your contacts, your location, or the contents of any page other than the music link you asked it to open.

What the app does not do

No account, sign-in, or email address is required or requested.
No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs are embedded.
No advertising, no advertising identifiers, and no cross-app or cross-site tracking.
No data is sold, rented, or shared with data brokers.

What is stored, and for how long

On the Patois service: each result is cached for up to 30 days (7 days for Spotify results) so that the same song does not have to be looked up twice. The cache is keyed by what the link points at and the song’s details. It contains no IP address, no device identifier, and nothing that identifies who requested it.
On your device: your settings (the service you picked, and whether links open automatically) are stored locally by the app, Safari or Chrome and never transmitted.
Operational logs: the service runs on Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare keeps short-lived request logs on our behalf for security, abuse prevention, and debugging. These are not used to build a profile of you.

Third parties involved in opening a link

Finding the matching song on the other platform means asking the platforms themselves.

Your device contacts these directly, so they see your IP address and which song is being looked up:

The Spotify, Apple Music or Apple Podcasts page for the link you are opening, to read its details. In the app, a shared Deezer podcast link is read from the Deezer API the same way.
Apple's iTunes Search API — to find the song on Apple Music or the podcast on Apple Podcasts, when that’s where it should open.

The Patois song map at map.getpatois.com is ours: public files of matching songs, which the apps and the Safari and Chrome extensions download to find a song without asking a music service. Each file is shared by many songs, the request carries nothing but your IP address, and the file is kept on your device for a day.

The Patois service queries these from our server, without forwarding your IP address:

The Spotify Web API — to find the song or podcast on Spotify, when that’s where it should open.
The Deezer API — to read a Deezer link, or to find the song or podcast on Deezer.
The Apple Music API or iTunes — to find the song on Apple Music in the cases the device doesn’t handle.

All of them are operated under their own privacy policies. Cloudflare processes the request as our infrastructure provider.

This website

This website has no analytics and sets no cookies of its own. It loads its typeface from Google Fonts, so Google sees your IP address when a page loads.

Children

Patois is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from them.

Your choices

There is no account to delete and no profile held about you. If you want the app to stop sending anything at all, turn off the Safari extension in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions, remove the Chrome extension and stop using the share sheet action, or delete the app. If you would like a cached result removed, get in touch and we will clear it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects what is sent or stored, the date at the top of this page will change and the updated policy will be published here before the change takes effect.
